Looking for the best Sims 4 pet mods?
I’ll be honest, the Sims 4 Cats & Dogs didn’t quite match my dreams for it simply based on previous pet iterations, there’s a lot you really can’t do. And while NOT everyone has the option (#sorryconsoleplayers), there are some great custom content and mods that can help you achieve a better experience.
If you want to level up your pet play in the Sims 4, some of these mods are really must have. From being able to select and control your pets (you know, like earlier versions) to walking more than one pet at the same time, these are the best Sims 4 pet mods on the market – the best news is, they’re all FREE!

Best Sims 4 Pet Mods
1. Editor’s Pick: Selectable Pets by AOM Studio
Pets in the Sims 4 work differently than previous versions AND they seem to get angry significantly faster (then subsequently run away). To avoid wayward pets, you need the Selectable Pets Mod.
Selectable Pets means you can select your pet like a sim and see their wants and needs. It’s saved me a lot of effort and sadness for my sims. But this takes it a step further than simply looking at how they’re doing, you can have them interact with items just like you would with your regular ole sims.
If you’re a heavy pets player, this mod will make it easier to not only make sure your pets needs stay up but it’ll also help you with training and familial relationships. In my opinion, the Cats & Dogs EP is unplayable without this mod (sorry console players!).
p.s. This bad boy DOES work for horses too!
This is truly the only pet mod you NEED for Sims 4, though there are some other great ones to try:
2. Go for a Walk with Cats by LittleMsSam
All the cat lovers out there NEED the Go for a Walk with Cats mod.
There’s not a lot to say about this mod considering it’s pretty self-explanatory, but it can be a big game changer if you’re trying to live the true life of a cat mom (or dad).
It’s worth noting that because cats don’t have athletic outfits, a Last Exception could be noted – but the mod still works!
3. Purchase Pet Treats by IlexSims
This handy little mod turns the small decorative pet treat jars into vending machines. The Purchase Pet Treats Mod allows your sim to buy treats directly from those decorative jars instead of having to add a big vending machine to the lot.
For all components of this to work you’ll need Cats & Dogs and Cottage Living. It also supports LittleMsSam’s Anti Heat Pill which is another “treat” for pets that block heat symptoms.
4. Working Pet Water Bowls by LittleMsSam
The Working Pet Water Bowls is a great addition to your game which really should have been included in the Cats & Dogs EP (seriously, only food bowls?).
It’s another tiny mod that feels like a big difference, it gives you working water bowls for your game.
5. Slower Pet Motive Decay by Snthe
Another self-explanatory mod, the Slower Pet Motive Decay makes playing with pets a bit more manageable. There are a lot of bugs in the Cats & Dogs EP, and one of the annoying ones is that pets need A LOT of attention.
Between needing to eat around the clock, wanting to play every time you’re in the room and not giving you any warning before they run away – there’s a bit that needs to be worked on. This mod helps slow down motive decay to making interacting with them more manageable.
6. Anti Fear Training (Pets) by LittleMsSam
Pets are afraid of A LOT in the Sims 4 (honestly, so are sims), which is why this Anti Fear Training mod comes in to play.
There are 4 levels that you can reach with this mini mod, all of which will help your pet stop fearing random things around your house. It’s worth noting that your pets can lose fear training if you’re not careful.
7. Breeding Unlimited by PolarBearSims
The Breeding Unlimited Mod allows you to breed with pets outside of your household. It also allows you to breed right after your pets have just had a litter.
Let’s be honest, this isn’t going to be the right mod for everyone, but it will for some players!
8. Go for a Walk with Dogs will fill up Needs by LittleMsSam
The Go For A Walk With Dogs Will Fill Up Needs is the perfect way to knock out two birds with one stone. You and your dog go for a little walk, and when they get back they’ve got full needs.
This is a great way to cut down on pet care while still technically handling it – it makes sense though, dogs are social and relive themselves on walks in real life!
9. Pernese Dragon Costume for Cats by EmilitaRabbit
These adorable little Pernese Dragon Costumes are perfect for cat moms and dads that love dressing their buddies up.
They’re fun, cute, Maxis match, and come in 6 different swatches. Both male and female cats that are adults or elders can wear them.
10. Ultimutt Indoor Dog Potty Pads by Ravasheen
If you’re an apartment player, these Indoor Dog Potty Pads are for you. There are 3 versions you can pick from: newspapers, traditional potty pads, and a grass mat. As someone who raised a puppy in an apartment (in real life) these bad boys are a lifesaver!
This mini mod by Ravasheen adds a ton to your gameplay while only taking up a little bit of space. You can use it to traditionally potty train your pup, or you can cheat with it. Your dog will need a clean potty pad to go to the bathroom on, so you’ll need to click on it to replace it with a new one.
11. Go for a walk with more Pets (Rabbitholes) by LittleMsSam
For anyone that has a pet household with several dogs, you know how long it can take to walk each one back-to back. Luckily, there’s the little Go For A Walk With More Pets Mod. This mod essentially puts you into a rabbit hole because the automation is a little to complex to do with multiple pets.
12. Pet Immortality Trait by CrucibleGaming
Loosing a dog can be a hard experience, which is why this Pet Immortality Trait is fantastic.
If you don’t want to lose your pets in the sims, you don’t have to. You simply add this trait to your pet and they’ll stay alive throughout your entire gameplay.
13. K-9 Officer Vest and Collar by EmilitaRabbit
For those that want to assign pet jobs or simply make their doggo look like a police officer in the Sims 4, this K-9 Officer Vest and Collar is the perfect choice.
Not quite as cute as the dragon costumes from earlier in the post, these look super professional.
14. Hire A Dog Walker/Jogger by LittleMsSam
You don’t always have the time to walk (or jog) with your pets. This small Hire A Dog Walker/Jogger Mod allows you to get someone to come over to your house and take your best bud out. You can hire up to 2 walkers at a time.
When they head over a window will pop up and you can decide which one you send out on a walk. When they get back, you can ask the dog walker to bath your dog if you want.
15. Muttropolitan Dog Set by Ravasheen
For a modern custom content pack for your pets, the Muttropolitan Dog Set is purrfect (the products work for cats too). It features a whole host of new meshes that are fit for any modern styled home, including:
- Food and water dishes (that deplete together!) and look perfect in your kitchen
- A functional dog bath
- Cute functional and decorative items, including a dog bed fit for the king (or queen) of the living room
- A full agility training course
If you love to decorate with pets in mind, this set is going to be perfect. Who doesn’t love something great for the family pup?
16. Dog Pregnancy Overhaul by N8sMom8496
If you want a more realistic pregnancy experience for your 4-legged friends, the Dog Pregnancy Overhaul is for you.
It breaks dog pregnancy down into 5 different stages, allowing your pets to experience a more emotional time in their lives. It changes how your pets and sims interact together during the pregnancy and give it a more realistic vibe.
17. Foster Family by LittleMsSam
The Foster Family Mod goes beyond pets, but they are included so it’s worth mentioning. With this mod you’re able to foster toddlers, children, teens and pets that are in need of families.
This mod allows you to bring a pet into your home and take care of them when they really need someone.
The creator, LittleMsSam has also added foster-related actions to pet-related objects in your house. It’s another fun aspect of gameplay that makes it a bit more real. It also adds the option to spay and neuter animals.
18. Allergic to Fur and More Traits by Ilkavelle
Not exactly the most pet-friendly mod, the Allergic to Fur and More Traits adds a little more realism into your game. It adds pet allergies to the game, and brings in a little non-animal love with pet fears. Those sims with the pet allergy trait can take allergy pills, head to immunotherapy and take therapy sessions about their fear of pets.
Pet-related Career Mods
19. Active Doggy Daycare Mod by ItsKatato
I LOVE a new active career, and this Active Doggy Daycare Mod is no exception. While the game (as long as you have Cats & Dogs) allows you to be a vet, more pet-related careers are always welcome.
To play the Active Doggy Daycare, you’ll need both Get to Work and Cats & Dogs. You’ll work similar to owning a vet clinic – purchase a business open the doors and get paid to watch dogs. You can hire employees, increase your pet training skills and earn more money as the days go on.
This custom active career isn’t perfect, but it’s a ton of fun. You’ll need to download a few extra mods, so make sure you read the download page before you get started!
20. Applied Animal Behaviorist Aspiration by IlkaVelle
To be clear, the Applied Animal Behaviorist Aspiration is NOT a career, but it would complement the veterinary business well.
This aspiration combines the pet training and veterinary skills to create someone who would make a good pet doctor OR even a doggy daycare owner. It’s a great way to up your pet-related gameplay.
21. Pet Assignments Pet Jobs by ShuSanR
The Pet Assignments Pet Jobs Mod adds rabbit hole jobs for your pets. They can choose from the following careers, which work like odd jobs:
- Police Mission
- Office Job
- Pet Star Studio
They can also volunteer in healthcare and attend training classes. It’s a cute little mod that gives your pets a life outside the home.
22. Cat Whisperer Career by SimplyAnjuta
The Cat Whisperer Career adds a new, albeit rabbit hole, career to your Sims 4 game. This cc career includes 8 levels and 2 branch choices after you’ve completed level 5. The job titles are:
- Solitary Cat Person
- Occasional Cat Sitter
- Regular Cat Feeder
- Pal of the Strays
- Cat Whisperer
Once you reach level 5, your game allows you two paths:
- Pamphlet Producer (Branch A: Cat Rights Activist) or Aspiring Uploader (Branch B: Cat Filmmaker)
- Fund Raiser (Branch A: Cat Rights Activist) or Beloved Filmmaker (Branch B: Cat Filmmaker)
- Every Cats Hero (Branch A: Cat Rights Activist) or TV Sim Savior (Branch B: Cat Filmmaker)
This is a fun little career for your sims to play, especially if you want a cat-focused game. For this career to work, you’ll need to have both Cats & Dogs (makes sense) and Discover University.
23. One Time Jobs for Children and Teens by Ilkavelle
This mini mod isn’t strictly related to pets but it adds jobs that involve pets (some of them anyway) that your teens and children can do. The One Time Jobs for Children and Teens Mod adds 6 new one-time jobs that they can do, including:
- Dog Walker
- Pet Sitter
- Paper Route
- Lemonade Stand
- Yard Work
- Lawn Mowing
It’s a great realistic kid experience, especially if you’re planning on adding in an educational mod that allows your kids to take a summer break. It’s never too early for them to learn some entrepreneurial skills.
Small Pet Mods
24. Parrot Pack by Kaiso
There are A LOT more pet options than cats and dogs, despite the fact that the pet EP only gave us those. For those that want to own a smart bird, the Parrot Pack is perfect. This cute little mod comes with 16 items including:
- 3 Parrot Cages
- Small Parrot Cage Stand
- 3 Perches
- Parrot Playground
- Wall Rope
- Spiral Ceiling Rope
- Informational Parrot Poster
- Parrot Painting
- Parrot Toy Storage Bin
- Kaytee Parrot Treat Jar
- 2 Parrot Food Items
The one thing this mod doesn’t come with is parrots – weird, I know. Luckily, the Animated Placeable Birds (Macaws) mod provides those.
25. Feedable Frogs by IlexSims
If cats and dogs are too big of a commitment for your sim household, then Feedable Frogs is for you. This little mod adds a frog to your gameplay, and allows you to feed and talk to it. It’s not a large mod but it can make your game just a little more realistic.
The big downside to this mod is that it’s NOT fully base game compatible, you need to have the Eco Lifestyle EP to allow children to feed the frog – without it, only teens to elders can do so. You also need to download the XML Injector (which you need for a lot of mods).
26. Rodents CC Pack by Kaiso
The Rodents CC Pack is a comprehensive set that has 20 different items for small rodents (including Guinea Pigs, Hamster, Rats), which is perfectly fit for anyone that wants small pets in there game. It’s worth noting while this is a fun pack, the pets are not interactive – they’re merely just décor.

If you want small pets in your game but zero responsibility, this is the pack for you. Drop a cute, decorative cage into your kids room for a little more real (looking) gameplay.
27. Feedable Insects by IlexSims
Looking for a different kind of pet that isn’t going to take too much effort to care for. Feedable Insects is just like the frog mod (and by the same person), making it a simple addition to your game.
This only allows you to feed and talk to your pet insect, but it’s a small mod that can add a bit to your game. Similar to Feedable Frogs, you’ll need Eco Lifestyle if you want children to be able to take care of the pet.
28. Hide & Squeak Hamster Cage by Ravasheen
The Hide & Squeak Cage is an adorable little pet mod that gives your sim a pet that doesn’t require as much work as a dog or cat. There are over 60 animations in this set, features 5 animal types and 12 cute swatches.
This little cage is 1 space wide and is slottable. You can place it on almost any surface, and it’s a collaboration of some of the best sims creators out there. It’s important to note you do need My First Pet Stuff Pack for this to work.
29. Sofishticated DIY Mini Aquarium by Ravasheen
This fun little pet mod is perfect if you’re looking for a beginner’s pet. This mini aquarium offers you an opportunity to put together your own little fish tank and 5 different fishes you can pick from.
It’s a cute little set that modernizes the Sims 4 fish ownership experience. Plus, you can decorate this bad boy up with the clutter provided, or put it around your home.
Final Thoughts: Sims 4 Pet Mods
If you’re looking for Sims 4 pet mods to up your pet-related gameplay there are a TON out there for you to choose from. These are only a tiny selection that I’ve used (or been recommended) for my own game play.
What I LOVE about the world of Sims 4 mods and CC is that you can turn your game into almost anything you want. There are plenty of super cute pet beds (and other furniture), costumes and other gameplay mods (big and small) that can help you make your game your own.
