The Ultimate Guide to the Sims 4 Freelance Career

I don’t know about you, but I love a little freedom in my life. That’s why I love playing with the Sims 4 freelance career.

To be fair, I’m a freelancer IRL and, realistically, it’s easier to get gigs there than it is in my day-to-day. But, I digress.

Whether you’re wanting to improve your sims painting skills as a digital artist, write the next great book while you clock in to your freelance writing career or dig into the video game scene as a programmer, there’s something out there for you.

This is a really easy career to get into and while it’s not technically an active career (like doctor, scientist or detective), your sims don’t go off into the void while they’re moving up the career levels.

The best part is, you don’t need to get an extra game pack to make it happen. You can set yourself up right from the career panel, phone or computer. So, let’s dig in!

How to select a freelancer gig on the Sims 4

How to Get Started as a Freelancer in the Sims 4

Getting started as a freelancer in The Sims 4 is just like getting signed up for any other career.

Take out your phone, head to your computer, or simply visit the career panel in your sim’s tool bar. Once you’re inside the Select a Career window, find Freelancer among the careers list and press the . From there you’ll be given an opportunity to pick which freelance “agency” you want to join:

  • Computer Experts (Trade: Freelance Programmer)
  • Electrified Artists (Trade: Freelance Artists)
  • Fighting Words (Trade: Freelance Writer)
  • Paranormal Investigator (if you have the Paranormal Stuff Pack)

Freelance Artist

The freelance artist career in the Sims 4 focuses on the painting skill. Though you’ll be working on a screen, not the easel. Everything you need to do to get this list of gigs done will happen right on the digital sketch pad.

Best traits for the freelance artist: Creative, Art Lover, Perfectionist

Freelance Programmer

Not surprisingly, the freelance programmer career will focus on building your sim’s programming skills. You’ll see that performance bar move up when you work on skills like encrypting things and working on the Simstagram servers.

Best traits for the freelance writer: Genius, Geek

Freelance Writer

The freelance writer will spend all their time honing those writing skills (which is GREAT if you also want to publish books). All your tasks should be able to be done through the computer.

How to Get a Freelance Gig

Getting a gig with the Sims 4 freelance career is a piece of cake.

You’ll need to head to your career panel where you’ll see the name of whichever of the freelance agencies you’ve chosen to work from. Click on the clipboard.

Inside the clip board you’ll see the name of the gig, how much you’ll earn, what skills you’ll require to successfully complete it, and the due date.

You’ll choose the gig you want, then the 2 to 4 task you’ll need to get that performance bar up will appear in the panel for your freelancing career.

Note that this is the same way you get gigs for the acting career.

How to Complete a Freelance Gig

Freelancers in the Sims 4 from their home office (just like in real life!). So you don’t have to get up and get ready to go to work like you do with normal careers. Instead, just like a real ole freelancer, your sim can have their breakfast then do their work in their PJs.

When you click on your sim there will be a new Freelancer menu you’ll be able to head to when you’ve got applicable work to be done. You can also find freelance work options on the computer and the digital sketchpad — depending on the track you’re on.

Once you’ve completed your work, you’ll find it in your sims inventory. Handing it in will be the last step, and something you NEED to do if you want to get paid.

Getting Work Rejected

Not every freelance hits it out of the park on the first try. Sometimes you hand in work and your client simply doesn’t like it. When that’s the case, you’ll have the option to make edits and improve it before handing it in again. Regardless of which track you’re in, you’ll likely face this a few time in your career.

How to Rank Up as a Freelancer

Every sims starts from zero, regardless of your skill level. Each time you level up you’ll get an additional 10% pay for gigs.

There is also an opportunity for clients to give you an extra 10% to 20% if they really like your work — though there’s not really anything you can do to ensure this.

If you want to move up a bit faster, the ambitious trait can help with that. On the other hand, the lazy trait will see you inch slower towards your goal.
