The Ultimate Guide to the Sims 4 Doctor Career

I was recently watching Netflix’s Lennox Hill and decided I wanted to pretend for a minute I was smart enough to be a doctor. So, I cracked open my Sims 4 and headed to the computer to choose a new job.

The Sims 4 doctor career comes with the Get To Work expansion pack and is an active career – which means you get to go to work with your sim!

I’m the first to admit, I get bored pretty quickly with rabbit hole careers. Who wants to sit there for 8 hours (sims time, AKA 3 to 5 minutes) for their sim to get home from the day job so you can keep playing. But not with this active career!

You get to head to work with your sim, diagnose and treat patients, deliver babies, do surgery and even make house calls. It’s a surprisingly fun career to play around with, and if you’re looking for the ins and outs of how it works you’re in the right place.

Let’s dig into the Sims 4 doctor career!

How to Become a Doctor in the Sims 4?

Becoming a doctor in the Sims 4 is easy, but you need to have the get Get To Work expansion pack.

When you’re in Live Mode click on your sim’s phone, computer or head to the career panel. From each of these you can find Doctor from the career list and you’re ready to begin.

Most sims will start at career level 1, Medical Intern. However, if you have Discover University and your sim takes a biology degree, they get to start later on in the career path. Where exactly they start depends on whether or not their degree is distinguished.

Doctor Career Structure

The Sims 4 doctor career is focused on care of patients. Your career performance is ultimately tied to how many sims you are able to give the correct diagnosis to and treat. If you’re ready to provide quality patient care, diagnose a variety of illnesses, and go down this illustrious path, then this is the career for you!

Career Levels

Most career paths in the Sims 4 have a set structure of job titles between 8 and 10, and the medical career is no exception.

Most sims will start at the bottom and work their way up.

However, if you play with the Discover University expansion, your sim can start later on in the career path if they have the right degree. If your sim gets a biology degree at university, there are career perks.

Regardless of whether or not you take the post-secondary college route, attending the doctor career venue regularly, focusing on having a stellar job performance, and provide expert care can help you move through the doctor career.

Players that go from newbies to high-ranking doctors will need to make it through the following career stages:

Ideal Mood

The ideal mood for sims heading to work in the medical field is Focused. While this won’t affect how you diagnose patients, it can help improve your overall Work Performance.

To get in a Focused mood before work, try:

  • Stargazing or looking into space (with a telescope)
  • Playing chess
  • Gaming or programming (with your computer)

Required Skills

Two skills that can make or break your medical career in the Sims 4 are handiness and logic. Your logic skills help you analyze the data you get from various tests. Handiness makes a big difference when it comes to handling (and fixing) the hospital equipment, including X-ray machines, treadmills, and analyzer machines.

Career Rewards

There are various career rewards you get throughout your (successful) doctor career in Sims 4. These include (in no particular order):

  • Various clothing items (from an intern outfit to a lab coat)
  • Doctor career styled room
  • Sickness Resistance trait
  • Seat of Health
  • Not So Blind Eye Chart
  • Skelly Sim
  • The Diligent Doctor’s Desk
  • Doctor of Medicine Diploma
  • Restless Thankless Medical Stool
  • Defeat the Darkness Surgical Light

Typical Active Work Day

Being a doctor (in the Sims 4) is relatively easy. But there are a lot of tasks that you need to do in a day, and not all of them contribute to your overall bonuses and promotions.

At the end of each day you get paid for the hours you worked, but you are also rewarded for the specific work you’ve done. If you spent 8 hours at the hospital as a registered nurse you’ll get your §760 but you can ALSO get additional cash (hellz, yeah!).

The additional cash you can earn comes directly from “curing” patients (AKA administering treatment) and doing emergency tasks (like analyzing and inputting samples or making house calls). That means, you want to get a ‘lil extra work done (especially if you’ve chosen the “become a zillionaire” life goal).

So, let’s dig into how to make the most of your shift at the hospital:

Career Tasks

TASKHOW TO
Make BedThis is literally making a hospital bed. Once a bed has been vacated by a patient, click on it and select “Make Bed.” There isn’t always a bed to be made, in the meantime do something else.
Mop PuddleThis is literally moping puddles in the hospital. Note that if you start mopping your sims will continue to move around the hospital and get all the puddles. You only NEED to clean one, so don’t let them go crazy.
Transfer Patient CaseYou’ll need to transfer a lot of cases at the beginning of your career because you won’t have the skills to actually diagnose. Click on the patient
Chat with co-workersFairly self explanatory – chat with co-workers (you can use the same one to meet multiple objectives)
Work EmergencyYou could be called to Record Emergency Analysis Data – you grab these from the front desk, conduct the analysis and input data into the computer. You might also be asked to attend house calls.

Sim doctors will also need to use various medical technology, depending on their career level. These include:

  • Performing x-ray tests on patients
  • Using the medical treadmills with patients to gather data
  • Perform emergency surgeries on the surgical table

But with a pair of skilled hands and some solid medical advice, you’ll do a great job!

Sims 4 Doctor Career Guide: Treating patients for various illnesses starts with getting them in the treatment beds

Diagnosing and Treating Patients

Many promotion levels are tied to the number of patients you treat, especially at the beginning of your career. But treating patients and diagnosing them are different.

You can get a little bump in your performance (and income) by treating patients that other doctors can diagnose. Patients that are ready for treatment should have flashing red over them. You can then choose that from the interactions menu and BAM you get the credit.

Disease Types and Symptoms

There are also visual cues for illnesses from sweaty shivers to bloaty head. Here’s a fun little chart that can help you asses various patient conditions so you can meet your daily tasks and provide the correct diagnosis:

ILLNESSSYMPTOMSCURE
Bloaty headHeadache, steam coming out of earsBloaty Head Shot
Burning bellyClutching stomach, wiping foreheadSurguery
Gas and gigglesLaughing, stripy rash, clutching stomachMedication for Gas and Giggles
Itchy plumbobStripy rash, itchingSurgery

Starry eyesSwirly rash, dizzinessMedication for Starry Eyes
Sweaty shiversSplotchy rash, itching, wiping foreheadInoculate for Sweaty Shivers
Tripple threatSwirly rashes, dizziness, coughingSurgury

Delivering Babies

Once you’ve reached level 8 in the career, you get to deliver babies at the hospital. Pregnant sims come into the hospital and start going into labor, it’s your job to take them to the Surgery Table and deliver that baby! Note: This also counts for Sims who have been impregnated by alien abductionmale and female.

Other emergency surgeries will come up throughout your Sims 4 practice of medicine. It’s your job to meet the biggest challenges, apply your (obviously Sims-based) medical knowledge and conduct thorough patient examinations so you can treat even the most severe conditions (I’m lookin’ at you, tripple threat).

Work Emergencies and Special Occasions

Both work emergencies and house calls will come in throughout your career.

House calls are NOT a priority, so you can skip them if you want. However, accepting them is pretty easy – simply click on the front desk (NOT the computer) and travel off site. There you’ll need to diagnose and treat patients before heading back to the hospital.

There are also emergency lab sample analysis that you might be asked to do. But you’ll want to make sure that you are STILL meeting your daily goals. You can accept this by clicking on the front counter too.

Final Thoughts: Sims 4 Doctor Career

The active careers (including doctors) really change gameplay for me. While I love the idea of some of the rabbit hole careers – sitting there and waiting for like 8 sim hours just for them to get back. Which is why I LOVE the Get To Work expansion.

While I find all of the different careers to be fun to play, Doctor is probably my favorite. I could be saying this simply because I find myself often watching medical shows on TV – but the other two active careers included seem to fall short in a few areas.

You get to try everything out in this career from a nursing role to primary care physician, and get the run of the entire hospital complex. I find the Doctor career to be engaging enough that I enjoy “going” to work with my sim. However, I do admit that it can get a little repetitive.
